As forms of connected technology used by health care providers increase — so do cyber security risks. Of particular concern are data breach threats involving patients’ protected health information (PHI). This sensitive information is highly desired by cyber criminals seeking to commit medical identity fraud. Tip of the Month: Unclaimed Property
A quick search of a few physician/group names found $400, $2000, and even $4000 in unclaimed checks. Most of these are checks from insurance companies just waiting for you to claim them. After searching for your name, search for your business name using multiple abbreviations such as Aus for Austin, or Cap for Capitol.
Most physicians have insurance reimbursements in these funds. Some were addressed to a business but the name was abbreviated. Other examples of property that can become abandoned are: dividend, payroll, and cashier's check; stocks, mutual fund accounts, and bonds; utility deposits and other refunds; bank accounts and safe deposit box contents; and insurance proceeds.
Unclaimed Property can be any financial asset that appears to have been abandoned by the owner for more than one year. Some examples of property that can become abandoned are:
Dividend, payroll or cashier's checks
Stocks, mutual fund accounts, bonds
Utility deposits and other refunds
Bank accounts and safe deposit box contents
Insurance proceeds
Mineral interest or royalty payments
Court deposits, trust funds, escrow accounts

Spanish Meducation® Spring Classes
Spanish Meducation® is the practical medical Spanish program offered through the Travis County Medical Society. The eight-week program (meeting once a week) is designed for all health care professionals, including physicians, pharmacists, nurses, therapists, social workers, technicians, emergency personnel and their support staff.
The classes develop beginning, intermediate and advanced conversational skills in general Spanish with a concentration on health care situations while grammar takes a back seat. All handouts are included in the tuition cost; no textbook is required.

Wonders & Worries Unmasked Gala
Wonders & Worries is an Austin-based nonprofit that provides free, professional mental health support to children and teenagers during a parent’s serious illness. Parents who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis, recurring heart condition or other illnesses like ALS or MS often don’t know how to talk about their disease and its impact on the family.
The Unmasked Gala is Wonders & Worries’ largest fundraising event and last year, over 550 people were present at this event at the JW Marriott in downtown Austin. It is well attended by both the medical and business communities and Texas Oncology is the presenting sponsor. There is a cocktail hour, dinner, live auction and dancing. The theme of this year's event is “futuristic glamour.”
Last year, Wonders & Worries helped 982 children and families thrive during a difficult time. In order to offer their services free of charge to client families, Wonders & Worries relies on generous donations from individuals and companies.

At this year’s Ken Shine Health Lectureship, Kathleen Dracup, RN, PhD, FAAN, will present strategies to overcome challenges to interprofessional collaboration in health care. Dracup is the winner of the 2020 Ken Shine Prize in Health Leadership, awarded to a person who has made significant leadership advancements in health. She is dean emeritus and professor emeritus of the School of Nursing at the University of California San Francisco.

At the next installment of Dell Med Grand Rounds, Patrice Harris, MD, MA, president of the American Medical Association, will discuss the AMA’s advocacy priorities in 2020 and its efforts underway to bring greater equity to medicine. She’ll talk about some of the most concerning national health trends and their roots in determinants of health. And she’ll look to the future of medicine – beyond the politics of an election year – and highlight the steps physician leaders are taking to improve the delivery of care and outcomes.

Patrice Harris, M.D., MA, is the 174th president of the American Medical Association — the first African-American woman to hold the position.
A renowned child and adolescent psychiatrist from Atlanta, Dr. Harris has been an active leader in organized medicine for her entire career. She has served on the AMA’s Board of Trustees since 2011, including a term as chair. She has also served as chair of the AMA Opioid Task Force since its inception in 2014. Beyond the AMA, Dr. Harris has held positions of leadership with the American Psychiatric Association, the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, the Medical Association of Georgia, and The Big Cities Health Coalition.
